Philip Holroyd It is with sadness that we record the death of Philip Holroyd, who died on 6th January 2008, following a massive stroke on December 21st from which he never recovered. Originally from West Yorkshire, Philip played with the Huddersfield Philharmonic Orchestra and The Slaithwaite Philharmonic Orchestra, where he was the leader of the orchestra for 24 years. He moved to York in 1990 after retiring, and joined the orchestra shortly afterwards. In his time with us, he deputised for the leader on several occasions, but preferred to support the violin section from the second desk, and was a regular player both at rehearsals and at concerts. When he moved to York he continued to form and play in small groups entertaining for lunches, clubs, charities etc. He was also a talented violin maker (one of his violins is played by Marjorie in the orchestra), and was playing his violin right until the end of his life. Just a week before his stroke, he played in concerts with both the Light and Symphony orchestras, and 48 hours before his stroke, was happily playing duets with Marjorie. To be playing at that level at 85 years old is a wonderful achievement, and he will be greatly missed by the violin section.
Members of the Light Orchestra and the Symphony orchestra joined to form a string ensemble which played at the memorial service held in his local church at Haxby on 17th January.

Constitution

The Orchestra constitution was created in 1947 when the orchestra was founded, and in the 60th year, it was decided to revise it in accordance with current regulations and the orchestra's requirements. A revised constitution was created and, after being made available to the members for comments was accepted at the 2007 AGM, held on 21st June 2007. The new constitution can be viewed here.

The text of the original 1947 document can be viewed here.

YLO Music Catalogue

You can now download the YLO music cataloge directly from the website by clicking here
Some items may require additional parts, or re-arranging before they can be played, depending on the current requirements of the orchestra. For this reason, we usually need a couple of weeks notice before a piece can be included in the playing pads.
To check an item's availability, or propose it as an item for playing, please see our librarians or one of the committee members.
